Namibia’s President-Elect Vows to Fulfill Campaign Promises

Namibia’s newly elected president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has assured the nation of her unwavering commitment to delivering on the promises made during her campaign. Speaking at the Electoral Commission of Namibia’s results center on Tuesday, Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed gratitude to Namibians for placing their trust in her leadership and reaffirmed her dedication to fostering unity and sustainable development.

Nandi-Ndaitwah, the current Vice President of Namibia, was officially declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election held from November 27 to 30. Her victory cements the continued dominance of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) in Namibian politics. As the first woman to be elected as Namibia’s president, her ascent marks a significant milestone in the country’s history.

In her acceptance speech, Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized SWAPO’s developmental vision and pledged to honor the commitments made to Namibians during the campaign. “Today, I am saying to the Namibian people, what we have been telling you through our campaign—that us in SWAPO and the team I am going to lead, we have made commitments, and I am saying we are going to do what we have told you. Thank you for the confidence and trust,” she declared.

The president-elect’s campaign promises revolved around key priorities designed to transform Namibia’s socioeconomic landscape. These include:

  • Fostering unity and diversity: Building a nation where inclusivity and cohesion are central to governance.
  • Natural resource beneficiation: Ensuring Namibia’s mineral wealth and natural resources contribute directly to national development.
  • Youth empowerment: Prioritizing skills development and employment opportunities for the youth to drive economic transformation.
  • Sustainable development: Promoting economic growth that aligns with environmental stewardship and social equity.

These promises resonate with a nation eager for inclusive growth and innovative solutions to its challenges.

In her remarks, Nandi-Ndaitwah praised Namibians for their commitment to peace, which she described as a cornerstone of the country’s development. “Namibians have shown their love for Namibia by voting for the continuation of peace and stability,” she said, underscoring the importance of unity in navigating Namibia’s future.

As she prepares to take office, Nandi-Ndaitwah acknowledged the enduring support for SWAPO, which has been at the helm of Namibia’s government since independence in 1990. “On behalf of the SWAPO leadership, supporters, and sympathizers, I would like to thank the Namibian people for once again having shown their confidence and trust for SWAPO to continue providing guidance on our developmental agenda and strengthening our institutions,” she remarked.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s election comes at a time when Namibia faces pressing challenges, including youth unemployment, economic diversification, and maximizing the benefits of its natural resource wealth. Her presidency will be closely watched, as citizens and stakeholders alike look to her administration to fulfill its promises.

SWAPO’s ability to maintain its influence amidst shifting political dynamics reflects its enduring connection to Namibia’s liberation history. However, as the nation evolves, so too must its policies and leadership approach.
