Senegalese football veteran Lamine Sané has officially joined French club Bourges Foot 18 as an assistant coach, marking a significant reunion with his former national teammate and club owner, Sadio Mané.
Sané, a retired defender-turned-midfielder, is stepping into a coaching role as Bourges aims to secure promotion from the French National Championship 2 to the Championnat National. The announcement signals a strategic move for the club, which Mané acquired in October 2023 with the ambition of transforming it into a competitive force in French football.
In a statement released by Bourges Foot 18, the club expressed its enthusiasm for the new appointment: “We are delighted to announce the arrival of Lamine Sané at Bourges FC as assistant coach alongside Romain Revelli for our team playing in National 2.” The club highlighted Sané’s pedigree both on and off the field, underscoring his leadership and experience as vital assets in Bourges’ push for success.
Lamine Sané’s return to football in a coaching capacity is a natural evolution for the seasoned player, whose career spanned nearly two decades. Born in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, France, on March 22, 1987, Sané holds both French and Senegalese nationalities.
Sané enjoyed an illustrious playing career across top footballing nations, gaining valuable experience in various leagues. He began his professional journey in France with FC Girondins de Bordeaux, where he made his mark as a commanding defender. His versatility and composure on the pitch earned him stints in Germany with Werder Bremen, in the Netherlands with FC Utrecht, and in Major League Soccer with Orlando City in the United States.
Sané officially retired from professional football in 2020, leaving behind a legacy that includes 35 caps for Senegal’s national team. He was a cornerstone of Senegal’s defense in continental competitions, representing the Lions of Teranga at the 2012 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His contributions were instrumental in strengthening Senegal’s position as a powerhouse in African football.
Bourges Foot 18, under Sadio Mané’s ownership, has been steadily building momentum as it targets higher-tier football. Mané’s acquisition of the club last year reflected his commitment to football development, not only in Senegal but also in Europe. By appointing Sané, a trusted figure with a deep understanding of both African and European football dynamics, Mané signals his ambition to propel Bourges to new heights.
The club is currently competing in Group B of the French National Championship 2, the fourth tier of French football. While Bourges has faced challenges this season, sitting ninth in the standings, the arrival of Sané alongside head coach Romain Revelli brings renewed focus and expertise to their promotion bid.
