Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate release of minors detained during the August protests against inflation and rising costs of living, Information Minister Mohammed Idriss announced via social media platform X. According to reports, between 30 to 40 minors were detained amid the demonstrations.
Minister Idriss further stated that the President has called for the formation of a special committee to review issues surrounding the arrest, detention, and treatment of these minors.
The protests, sparked by inflation and economic pressures, began on August 1 and have fluctuated in intensity. The initial 10 days of August saw particularly active demonstrations, with local media reporting at least 30 fatalities during the unrest. The President’s directive seeks to address concerns around the handling of detained youth and ensure fair treatment as Nigeria navigates its ongoing social and economic challenges.
